The Problem With Building IoT Solutions From Scratch

An equipment manufacturer wants to add remote monitoring to their product line. A system integrator has a customer asking for a predictive maintenance solution for their precision machining operation. A retail technology company needs a cold chain compliance platform for their customers in food service.

All three organizations face the same choice: build the platform infrastructure from scratch, or find a way to get to a working solution faster.

Building from scratch means:

  • 12–24 months to develop a production-ready IoT platform
  • A dedicated engineering team to build and maintain it
  • Years before the platform is mature enough to deliver the monitoring, analytics, and alerting capabilities the customer actually needs
  • Platform infrastructure cost that has to be recovered before the solution generates margin

ArgusForge exists to eliminate that path. It turns ArgusIQ’s platform capabilities into the foundation of a vertical solution — configured, branded, and deployable — without requiring the solution builder to write platform code.

What ArgusForge Is

ArgusForge is a solution-configuration layer built on top of ArgusIQ. It provides the tools to define, configure, and package a vertical IoT solution using ArgusIQ’s modules as building blocks.

A solution built with ArgusForge is not a demo. It’s a production-ready deployment configuration that can be instantiated for each new customer site in hours rather than days — with pre-configured device profiles, dashboard layouts, alarm rules, asset record templates, CMMS workflow configurations, and white-label branding all included.

What ArgusForge Packages

Device profiles: The sensor types, protocol configurations, payload decoders, and data normalization rules for the hardware the solution uses. Define once, deploy to every site. When a new site comes online, the device profiles provision automatically — no per-device configuration required.

Dashboard templates: The specific dashboard views the end user needs — not the full ArgusIQ interface, but the purpose-built views that match the solution’s use case. A cold chain solution shows compliance-centric views: excursion history, temperature trend by cabinet, compliance report generation. A predictive maintenance solution shows asset health, maintenance schedule, and trend analysis. The end user sees the interface that matches their job, not the full platform they don’t need.

Alarm rule sets: The detection logic appropriate for the solution — pre-configured thresholds, escalation workflows, and notification routing specific to the vertical. A cold chain solution comes with food safety thresholds pre-set; a fuel monitoring solution comes with leak-rate detection configured. The solution deployer adjusts the defaults; they don’t build the logic from scratch.

Asset record templates: The fields, relationships, and maintenance history structures appropriate for the assets the solution monitors. A medical equipment tracking solution needs different asset fields than a manufacturing equipment solution. ArgusForge packages these templates so every deployment starts with the right data model.

CMMS workflow configurations: The maintenance workflows specific to the vertical — PM schedule templates, work order types, completion checklist requirements, parts catalog categories. A facility maintenance solution needs different workflows than a fleet maintenance solution.

White-label configuration: Brand identity, custom domain, color scheme, terminology adjustments. An equipment manufacturer deploying ArgusForge can offer their customers a monitoring solution branded as their own product — not as “ArgusIQ.”

Who ArgusForge Is For

OEMs and Equipment Manufacturers

An equipment manufacturer adding IoT monitoring to their product line needs the monitoring to be part of the product — not an afterthought the customer configures separately. ArgusForge lets the manufacturer define the monitoring configuration that makes sense for their equipment, package it as a solution, and deliver it as part of the product experience.

A pump manufacturer can offer a remote monitoring package where every pump ships with sensors pre-configured to ArgusForge’s pump health solution — baseline calculation, bearing temperature monitoring, vibration analysis, PM scheduling tied to operating hours. The customer receives a working solution, not a platform to configure.

System Integrators

System integrators delivering IoT solutions to end customers face a choice: build a platform for every project, or build expertise on a platform once and deploy it across many projects.

ArgusForge makes the second path economically compelling. A system integrator who builds an ArgusForge solution configuration for cold chain monitoring, predictive maintenance for manufacturing equipment, or water utility monitoring can deploy that configuration to each new customer site in a fraction of the time a from-scratch build would require.

The solution configuration is reusable. The deployment work is mostly provisioning, not development. The SI’s value is in the domain expertise embedded in the configuration — not in platform engineering.

Enterprise Organizations Deploying Across Multiple Divisions

A large manufacturer deploying predictive maintenance across 12 facilities doesn’t want 12 different configurations of the same solution. ArgusForge packages the enterprise’s preferred configuration — the asset record fields they use, the alarm thresholds their engineers have validated, the dashboard views their maintenance supervisors need — and makes it the deployment standard for every site.

New sites onboard to the standardized configuration. The enterprise operations team can compare performance across sites without normalizing data across 12 different setups.

What ArgusOps Is

ArgusForge builds the solution. ArgusOps operates it at scale.

ArgusOps is the runtime operations layer for managing deployed ArgusIQ solutions across multiple sites, customers, or divisions. It answers the operational questions that arise when an IoT deployment goes from a single facility to dozens or hundreds:

  • Which gateways across all deployed sites are offline right now?
  • Which sites have devices that haven’t reported in 24 hours?
  • Which deployments have firmware versions that need updating?
  • What’s the fleet-wide alert status summary across all customer accounts?
  • Which sites have open critical work orders that haven’t been acknowledged?

These questions are difficult to answer when each site is a separate system that requires individual login. ArgusOps aggregates the operational status of every managed site into a single operations console.

ArgusOps Capabilities

Device and gateway health monitoring: Real-time visibility into connectivity status for every device and gateway across every managed site. Offline detection, last-seen timestamps, connectivity quality metrics. Issues surfaced immediately rather than discovered when a customer reports a problem.

Multi-site alert aggregation: All alerts across all managed sites in one view, filterable by site, severity, status, and customer. Escalation management for alerts that require operations team response rather than customer response.

Firmware and configuration management: Fleet-wide firmware version visibility. OTA firmware update orchestration across sites, with staged rollout control. Configuration drift detection — sites where the deployed configuration no longer matches the intended standard.

Customer/tenant operations: For deployments serving multiple end customers, ArgusOps provides the operations team’s view of customer account health — which customers have active incidents, which are coming up for renewal, which have requested support recently.

Field operations support: When a field technician is at a site, ArgusOps provides the diagnostics that help them work efficiently: which devices are offline and when they last reported, which firmware versions are running, which configuration settings are active.

ArgusForge + ArgusOps Together: The Full Lifecycle

The full solution lifecycle with both tools:

Phase 1 — Build (ArgusForge): Define the solution configuration — device profiles, dashboards, alarm rules, asset templates, CMMS workflows, white-label branding. Test the configuration in a staging environment. Package it as a deployable solution.

Phase 2 — Deploy: For each new site or customer, instantiate the packaged configuration. Provision devices and gateways against the pre-defined profiles. The deployment is a configuration exercise, not a build exercise.

Phase 3 — Operate (ArgusOps): Monitor the deployed fleet from a single operations console. Respond to connectivity issues, firmware needs, and configuration changes across all sites without logging into each one individually.

Phase 4 — Improve (ArgusForge): Update the solution configuration as the solution evolves — new device types, updated alarm logic, new dashboard views. Deploy updates across the fleet through ArgusOps.

A Concrete Example: Cold Chain Compliance Solution

An IoT company wants to offer a cold chain compliance solution for food service retailers. They have relationships with retailers and knowledge of the food safety compliance requirements, but not a platform team.

With ArgusForge:

The company builds a cold chain solution configuration using ArgusIQ as the platform:

  • Device profiles for commercial refrigeration sensors (LoRaWAN temperature loggers)
  • Dashboard templates showing temperature trend by unit, active excursions, compliance status
  • Alarm rules with food safety thresholds (FDA/FSMA 204 excursion detection, escalation logic)
  • Compliance report templates generating the documentation retailers need for audits
  • White-label configuration under their brand

Each new retail customer is deployed against this configuration. Onboarding time: 1–2 days per site for the physical hardware and device provisioning. The platform configuration is already done.

With ArgusOps:

The company’s operations team monitors all retailer deployments from one console:

  • Which stores have offline sensors right now?
  • Which stores had excursions in the past 24 hours?
  • Which stores have compliance documentation gaps that need attention?

The team can address issues across all customer accounts without managing 200 separate logins.

What Neither Tool Replaces

ArgusForge configures what ArgusIQ can do. It cannot add capabilities that ArgusIQ doesn’t have. If a vertical solution requires a capability — a specific integration, a compliance export format, a sensor protocol — that ArgusIQ doesn’t support, ArgusForge cannot produce it from configuration alone.

ArgusOps manages fleet operations. It doesn’t replace customer success, account management, or the domain expertise required to configure a solution correctly in the first place. A solution built on poor alarm logic or incomplete asset templates will have operational problems that ArgusOps can observe but not correct.

The tools accelerate the path from platform capability to deployed solution. They require genuine domain expertise to use well.

Deployment Models

ArgusForge and ArgusOps are available as:

Included in ArgusIQ enterprise tier: For organizations building solutions on ArgusIQ for internal use or for their customers.

Standalone for system integrators: System integrators building customer-facing IoT solutions can access ArgusForge and ArgusOps without building their own ArgusIQ deployment — the platform runs as Viaanix-hosted infrastructure, white-labeled under the SI’s brand.
